Local government in New Hampshire is a direct democracy that is centered around the annual Town Meeting.
In most New Hampshire towns, including Easton, the legislative body is the Town Meeting itself. This is where the fundamental decisions about our community's future are made by the registered voters. Typically held in March, the Town Meeting gathers citizens to discuss and vote on a wide range of issues, from the annual budget and zoning ordinances to capital projects and other critical warrant articles. It's pure democracy in action—every voter can speak, ask questions, and directly influence town policy.
Our Select Board is the town's governing body, acting as our executive branch. Elected by residents, the Select Board manages daily operations and carries out decisions made at Town Meeting. Their duties include overseeing town departments, managing finances, appointing officials, and ensuring effective delivery of town services. The Select Board's authority comes directly from, and is accountable to, the will of the Town Meeting.
Each year, the Select Board prepares a "warrant"—an agenda of articles for residents to vote on. Citizens can also petition to include articles, ensuring diverse community concerns are addressed. At the Town Meeting, these articles are debated, amended, and voted on. The moderator, an elected official, keeps the meeting orderly.
The Easton Town Offices are at 1060 Easton Valley Rd and open on Monday afternoons from 2 PM to 6 PM, or Tuesdays after Monday federal holidays.
